With back-to-school season here, you’re probably on the hunt for some cool and unique supplies for you or someone you know.

After doing a little YouTube hunt, I found this tutorial from Aira Tran on how to turn an old lip balm into a watermelon pencil sharpener. It’s so cute, super easy to make, and perfect for school!

Here’s how you do it.

What you’ll need is:

  • At least one used EOS or round lip balm (2 in green and red preferred, but not necessary)
  • Tiny pencil sharpener
  • Paint or nail polish (depending on what color lip balm you have, you could need multiple colors like red/pink, light green, dark green, and black)
  • Tiny paintbrush (if you’re using regular paint)
  • Toothpick
  • Clear nail polish to seal it in
  • Hot glue gun & hot glue

First, clean the inside of the lip balm and make sure there’s none left. Remove the plastic in the bottom portion.

If you have both a red and green lip balm container, use the bottom end of the green and top end of the red. Otherwise, paint the top red/pink and/or the bottom light green.

Take the bottom portion and paint large, jagged stripes on it. Then, use a toothpick to paint smaller lines in between the jagged lines. Let that dry, then seal with clear polish.

For the top, paint it red or if necessary. Once dry, use the toothpick to paint on some black watermelon seeds. Let that dry, then seal with a clear top coat.

Heat up your hot glue gun. Without any glue, use the heated tip to melt a hole into the bottom of the bottom portion. Trim off the excess plastic.

Glue the tiny pencil sharpener into the bottom portion, making sure the holes line up on the bottom so the pencil can go in easily. Once everything is dry, your pencil sharpener is ready!

What other fruits, veggies, or items would you make out of this sharpener?
