Applique quilting is one of my favorite techniques. It always looks adorable, no matter the theme, and I feel like it takes much less work than traditional block quilting.
This space applique quilt is my new favorite– the planets, stars, comets, and spaceship are just too cute. Especially since the spaceship is also a sewing machine!
Rob with Man Sewing creates this quilt with basic raw edge fusible applique. He calls this the “Out Of This World” quilt, and rightly so. Who knew making something this stunning could be so easy?
All of the applique designs that he uses on the quilt can be found in this free PDF here.
The designs are made of freeform shapes, which he does with a rotary cutter. At first, the task seems a little daunting, but it’s easy to learn with his video tutorial!
As for his background fabric, he uses has glow in the dark stars, and I’m obsessed with it. I’m definitely going to be using more of this fabric in other projects in the future.
I decided to add some more planets, a nebula, and a few other details as I went. I thought this quilt couldn’t have gotten any cuter, but I was wrong! You can add so much and it’s so adorable.
Watch Rob assemble this quilt below, and blast off into making your own!
