As a quilter, there’s nothing that makes me happier than a free pattern, especially when that pattern is something I’ve never seen before.

This shattered frames quilt is exactly that, and it’s a great way to cut down on your fabric stash a little bit. You can get the free pattern here, and it’s super simple to follow.

You’ll need a ton of 2.5″ strips and some 8″x11″ pieces. The strips will go around the 8″x11″, stitched together at random angles and trimming as you go.

As you finish that piece, that will become your next larger piece like the 8″x11″ before it. You’ll piece the strips around that and continue until you’ve got your quilt top!

Besides adding her regular batting, backing, and borders, Angela from The Midnight Quilt Show also does a ton of free motion stitching on this piece. It ends up looking great against the solid fabric.

I decided to add some patterned fabric from my stash to mine to give the pattern a little more pop. With the piecing this pattern requires, the finished product ended up looking really cool.
