When you cook soup or warm something up in the microwave, you often can run the risk of burning yourself, it can be a real problem, but what if the answer to that problem is a potholder? Well, you already use a potholder you may say, but what about a potholder that sits under your bowl that you can take with you from microwave to table or TV tray and it also keeps your food warm, what a bonus! These bowl cozies are also washable so if the kids spill soup or oatmeal on them you just throw them in the laundry. I couldn’t wait to get started on my cute little quilted bowl cozies and luckily I already had the materials to make some in my sewing room. The instructions are for a 10 inch bowl that is oatmeal size, but you can make any size you want.
Materials:
- Two (10″ x 10″) pieces of cotton quilting fabric
- Two (10″ x 10″) piece of cotton batting
- Sewing Machine
- Thread
- Scissors
Directions:
You do this step 2 times, (one with your top fabric then another with your liner) Sew your cotton batting onto your top fabric with an X shape, securing it down.
Then fold in half (right sides together and pin) and draw a dart line on each end of corner fold (1″ x 2″) then sew darts.
Then fold in half the other way and draw 2 more (1″ x 2″) dart lines on those folds and sew down.
Then repeat the entire thing again with your backing fabric, then sandwich and pin the two (right sides together) and sew leaving a 2 1/2 inch opening to turn right side out.
Then turn right side out and close your opening sewing a blind stitch by hand or machine outer stitch.
These Quilted Soup Bowl Cozies are so cute and easy to make I ended up making about 20 to give to my family as gifts.
