I am an enormous dog lover. If one comes around me, I stop everything I’m doing to learn its name, play with it, and pet it. They’re so cute and bring so much joy to wherever they are.

As a dog lover and a quilter, I was ecstatic to see someone did a quilt made entirely of little Scotty dog blocks! Not only that, but they did free motion stitching to look like the dog, too!

I think the best part of this tutorial is the history behind its inspiration. This little Scotty dog quilt was inspired by Fala, the dog of Franklin D. Roosevelt, former U.S. president.

Eleanor Burns with Quilt in a Day tells some really interesting stories about Roosevelt and Fala in this video tutorial, all the while teaching you how to applique and free motion some Scotty dogs!

If you’re a fan of any sort of history, or are just a dog lover, this tutorial is definitely for you. I can’t wait to give these easy applique blocks a try, especially since I get to personalize each dog!

This tutorial is incredibly simple to follow, too, so even if you aren’t a master quilter, you can easily figure out how to stitch this up for yourself.
