Looking for a fun cake recipe for a special occasion? Try this rainbow leopard cake! This tutorial makes for an amazingly colorful, awesome tasting cake.
The cake reminds me a lot of Lisa Frank. When I was a kid, her colorful animal designs were all the rage. If she were a cake baker, I think this would be her specialty!
This is perfect for birthdays and any other parties this summer. It looks super hard to make, but with a little bit of patience, anyone can make it. It’s really easy!
What You Need:
- Any 5 bright gel food colors and a black
- 6 cups of Vanilla Butter Cream
- 6 cups of Vanilla Cake Batter
- Piping Bags
- 8 inch Pans (3)
- Regular Vanilla Butter Cream
- Icing Smoother
Here’s How:
Mixing The Batters With Colors
Step 1
Separate the cake batters in separate bowls to color them. We will use 1 cup of the cake batter for the black color. Mix in the black food coloring gel and set it aside.
Step 2
For each of the other colors, we will be using between a quarter to half a cup of cake batter. Mix each with a tiny drop of the food color. Whatever is left over is going to be the white portion of the cake.
They should now look like these once they’re put in piping bags.
Laying Out Of The Leopard Spots
We are going to do these 3 times in 8 inch round baking pans.
Step 1
Into a greased 8″ round cake pan, place 1/2 cup of vanilla cake batter into the bottom of the pan, and use an offset spatula to smooth covering the entire bottom.
Step 2
Take you black batter in a piping bag and make 5 circles similar to the photo below.
Step 3
Next, do the same with the colored batters in the piping bag. Go around the black circles covering the black lines. Go around twice to make sure that all of the black lines have been covered.
You can do this in any color order of your choice. 1 black Circle = 1 Color.
Step 4
After covering the black lines with colors, do a second round of black circles on top of the colors.
Step 5
Fill in all empty areas with white, then cover all the colors using the white batter.
Step 6
Bake it and it should now look similar to this.
Icing the Cakes
Step 1
First we need to remove the top part of the cake.
Step 2
Take some of you butter cream mixture and spread it on top of each cake, placing the next cake on top as you go.
Step 3
Once all you have all the layers of the cake together, put the icing around the outside, starting at the bottom layer. Start with the first color you want, and move on to the next.
It should now look similar to this.
Step 4
Moving forward, continue putting the icing around the top of the cake with the last color you used on top of the sides.
Step 5
Continue going around in to the middle with the different colors.
Step 6
Once you’re done, get your icing smoother and go around the sides, then on top to smooth it out.
Step 7
Wait for that buttercream to harden.
Next, get your black colored piping bag, and create erratic half-circle shapes similar to leopard marks. Add dots randomly as well for a real leopard effect.
Cut into it, and your Rainbow Leopard Cake is ready!
