I absolutely adore abstract art. I think it has a place anywhere, and it’s so beautiful yet so messy and unorganized. This acrylic fluid painting is just that, and it’s super easy to make!

Here’s how you do it.

Just kidding. Here’s how you do it.

What you’ll need is:

  • A canvas
  • Acrylic paint in as many or as few colors as you’d like
  • Water
  • Dish soap
  • Plastic cups
  • Spray lacquer/ sealant

First, mix together water and a little bit of dish soap. Squirt the acrylic paint into cups, one for each color. Add the water and dish soap solution, then mix together until it’s runny.

In a separate plastic cup, start pouring different colors of paint in layers. Once the cup is full is when the fun starts.

Stand your canvas up on some additional plastic cups and make sure there’s a drop cloth or some newspaper to make cleanup easy later.

Then, quickly smack the cup down on to the canvas, open side down so the paint touches the canvas. Before you lift the cup, tap the bottom so the paint runs down as much as possible.

Release the cups by moving them upward in a zig-zag formation, and sway the canvas around so the paint covers every inch and drips off the sides.

Wait at least a day for it to fully dry, then spray it with your sealant of choice. Once that’s dry, it’s ready to hang!
