I love cake, and I love any reason to eat cake. If you live in The United States and you celebrate the 4th of July, then you know Independence Day is just as much a day for food as it is for celebration.

Along with your usual hamburgers and hotdogs, make July 4th and excuse to eat cake. The best cake to eat on that day? Uncle Sam’s hat, of course!

Jen Johnson from Cookies Cupcakes and Cardio brings this vision to life. The outside is a red hat with white stripes and a blue band covered in white stars, and the inside is 3 layers of white cake with white buttercream and red and blue stars. Not only is it festive, but yum.

Making it is surprisingly easy. First, you’ll make a red and blue marbled cake. All you’ll want to do is scoop some dollops of red and blue cake batter in a pan, until it covers the bottom. Try to alternate as much as you can so red or blue doesn’t take over the whole cake.

Take a knife and zigzag up and down the cake. Turn the cake and do it one more time and it will look similar to the cake below (except with red and blue, obviously). Bake this cake according to instructions.

Then you’ll want to cut out stars from this cake, cutting out wedges, turning them on their sides, and using a cookie cutter to cut it out.

Put about a cup of white batter on the bottom of a cake pan. Add your stars in a ring around the center of the cake, and cover this ring with more white cake batter. Do this 3 times for 3 layers, and then bake the cakes for 45 minutes to an hour.

The stars will stay moist because of the batter, so don’t worry about those overcooking.
