A few years ago, Patti LaBelle’s famous sweet potato pie was literally flying off the shelves. It was sold out everywhere, and people were paying triple the price to buy the pie off of EBay.
Now, LaBelle’s delicious pie is still in high demand, but she’s released her recipe for everyone to try out themselves! So if you wanna try this pie, prefer the homemade route, or can’t get down to your local WalMart, this recipe is for you.
Here’s what you’ll need to make possibly the best sweet potato pie ever:
- 2.5 lbs sweet potatoes, boiled or baked, then peeled and mashed
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup evaporated milk
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Pie crust
Preparing this famous pie is surprisingly easy. Once your potatoes are mashed, wait for them to cool off. In the meantime, melt your butter and wait for that to cool off as well.
Beat your eggs in another bowl, and mix all 3 of these ingredients together.
Then add your evaporated milk, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt, and sugar. As Patti says in the tutorial “it doesn’t matter what order, just dump it!”
Just make sure all of your ingredients are room temperature, and you’re good to mix!
Once those are all mixed up, pour it into your pie crust, and bake it at 375 degrees fahrenheit for 15 minutes. Then, lower the oven temperature to 350 degrees and bake it for an additional 30 minutes.
That’s it! Patti LaBelle’s most famous recipe is all yours!
