All About That Piping

If you’ve never used piping in your sewing projects before, it’s basically a pop of color and texture that works well on a wide array of projects. It’s basically a colorful cord you sew on.

You can usually purchase your own piping at fabric stores, but sometimes you need a specific shade or pattern of piping that you just can’t find in the store. So what are you going to do?

Make your own, of course! It’s one of the easiest sewing DIYs you can do, and you probably already have what you need to do it!

To make piping, you will need:

  • fabric of choice
  • cord of choice

Seriously, that’s it. When it comes to your fabric, making your own piping really allows for whatever kind of fabric you love: solid, patterned, stiffer, softer… whatever you’d like!

The same goes for your cording, which you can find in the upholstery section of your fabric store. There are a wide variety of sizes, textures, materials and more… it’s all up to you!

How To Do It

Basically you’ll cut a strip of fabric that will wrap around your cord, then you’ll sew it all in place. Simple, right?

As for creating projects with piping, it’s easiest to do it with a piping foot. Piping feet make the whole process a lot easier, faster, and cleaner. You’ll love how the end result turns out.
