When it comes to Halloween, nothing comes to mind more than a creepy cemetery. You could go out and buy a ton of fake gravestones, but none of them have that personal touch.

Now I’m not saying to go out and purchase your gravestone early (I mean hey, whatever floats your boat), but you can make some gravestones to decorate your house or front yard.

HGTV Handmade created these sassy gravestones from cereal boxes, and they’re very simple to make. The best part? You can make them say whatever you want!

To make these, you will need:

  • Cereal boxes
  • Scissors
  • Word or phrase print-out
  • Tape
  • X-acto knife
  • Decorations to glue on the headstone (skull, for example)
  • Hot glue
  • Paper
  • Plaster bandage strips
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • LED tea light

Cut open your cereal box and cut it into whatever gravestone shape you’d like, and tape on your word template. Use the X-acto knife to cut out your phrase.

Tape up your box and use paper to cover the openings (besides the words, of course).

Glue on any decorations you’d like, and paste on your plaster bandage strips. Once it dries, Paint your gravestone however you’d like, let it dry, and it’s ready to use to decorate!

Place in your LED tea light and watch people freak out at your cool DIY decoration.

Happy Halloween!
