A Classic Hourglass

The hourglass: a simple block that every quilter needs to make sure they add to their arsenal. If you don’t know how to make one of these, it’s an incredibly useful block. So, here’s how to do it.

First, grab two different fabrics, then we can get going on making the block…

Believe it or not, making one of these blocks is not only easy, but the technique is a lot less complicated than you’d probably think.

Jean & Colleen from Fons & Porter break it down in a super simple tutorial, making this easy block even easier. Begin by grabbing your two squares of fabric and stacking them on top of one another.

One Simple Trick

From here, use some sewer’s chalk or something else to mark diagonally across the squares. After this, sew two diagonal lines on each side of the drawn line.

Cut down the drawn diagonal line, then press these open and stack them on top of one another, repeating the process to create the hourglass.

Seriously, it really is that simple. You do this, and you can finish a ton of hourglasses super quickly. A whole quilt can be done in no time!

Watch Fons & Porter’s video below to get a better idea of how to do this. Good luck!
