The Old Fashioned
The old fashioned: such a classic cocktail that everyone seems to love. Everyone knows how to make it: muddle sugar with bitters, add whiskey and a twist of citrus rind, and it’s ready to drink.
Over the years, there have been all sorts of twists on this delicious drink. Some people use brandy instead of whiskey. Some make it warm for winter. Some add chocolate or coffee. The possibilities are endless.
Southern Living‘s Matt Moore has come up with a twist that may be the best ever created– a bacon old fashioned.
That’s right, adding bacon to an old fashioned. It may sound crazy, but it’s actually delicious.
The smoky saltiness of the bacon pairs perfectly with the smokiness of the whiskey. The sweetness of the sugar mixed with the acidic sour flavor of the citrus and bitters are perfect for finishing it off.
Your end result is a salty, smoky, sweet and sour cocktail that you won’t be able to get enough of. Like a classic old fashioned, it’s pretty easy to make, so let’s get started by grabbing your ingredients.
Ingredients:
- 1 sugar cube (or 1/2 tsp. granulated sugar)
- 2-3 dashes bitters (Matt Moore suggests one called Angostura)
- 1 tsp. water
- 1/4 cup bacon-infused bourbon whiskey (you can infuse with hickory smoke flavored syrup and a pinch of salt if Matt’s bacon fat technique isn’t your thing)
- bacon strips
- orange peel strips
- maraschino cherries
To make your cocktail, muddle your sugar, bitters, and water in an old-fashioned glass. This releases the flavors and blends the ingredients.
Swirl this mixture to coat the glass, then add 1 large ice cube and pour your bourbon over ice. Now it’s ready to serve!
